THE LODGE OF ECONOMY No. 76

"WARRANTED No.   88 (Athol) 29th January 1761   OTHER NUMBERS  111 (1814), 90 (1832),  76 (1863).

If there were such a thing as the 'mother' of the Province, it would have to be
THE LODGE OF ECONOMY No. 76

Almost one in every five Freemasons in the Province can trace his masonic 'ancestry' back to the small band headed by John Batson, who in 1761 were granted a Warrant by the Earl of Athol to:

"form and hold a Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons aforesaid, at the house known by the sign of the Bakers' Arms, in the High Street, Winchester" ...... "This Warrant is renewed, the original having been burnt, this 7th. April, 1801"

At least a thousand masons in the Province of Surrey can also trace their 'line' back to Economy."

(The above being extracts from "Masonic History of Hampshire & Isle of Wight".  WBro F. D. Laugharne, P.P.S.G.W)
